The Snellman House

Finland’s national philosopher J.V. Snellman lived in this yellow house during his youth, 1813–1820. Later the building has functioned as, amongst other things, a city hotel, a hospital, and a fire station. On the other side of the city straits, on Kaarlelankatu, one of the so called Kokkokivi rocks which was the young Snellman’s favourite climbing place, has been preserved. In 2006, a memorial statue to Snellman (by Pekka Jylhä) was unveiled on the rock.
